If you want people to play both parts of a duet, don't ask. Just write out both parts for each player. Doable Duos are based on familiar melodies and the range rarely exceeds two octaves. Major and minor keys through three sharps or flats are used. By forcing each player to perform the accompaniment, sight reading and musicianship improve. Performers learn and hear unfamiliar melodies that sing the bass line, imply chords, create fill-ins, and serve as musical development. After a few years of teaching, one begins to see the same old pieces, over and over again, scattered through several methods and anthologies. They are easy, guitaristic and short. Perhaps too short. I have collected my favorites and composed second guitar parts for them. Each composition is designed to give maximum flexibility to students and teachers by working as a duet, independent solo, or medley to lengthen the original short score. So, the duets are not printed in score form, but are notated as seperate pieces on facing pages.
